ABSTRACT

Salamanca is a small city with just 140,000 inhabitants. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO declaration joined seven more areas to the old town that are located on the outskirts of the city to form a unique architectural complex in the world. The Plaza Mayor is considered the heart of the city. It is an impressive manifestation of Baroque art. Also, stand out the two cathedrals: the new one from the 16th century and the old one from the 12th century. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 was about to topple them.

One of the oldest universities in Europe is in Salamanca. There are more than 32,000 university students that live in Salamanca every year. In Salamanca, also there is a wide range of ELE academies accredited by the Cervantes Institute. These academies serve the more than 25,000 students who choose Salamanca to develop a language immersion stay. This volume of students and the concentration of schools per square meter make Salamanca one of the main cities for language tourism in Spain, being called the city of Spanish.
